About East Marion, NY
East Marion is a hamlet on the North Fork of Long Island – in the Town of Southold. The community is served by the Oysterponds Union Free School District. When European settlers arrived in the area, local native American people, called the Corchaugs, had named the place Poquatuc. The Europeans called the area Oysterponds due to the abundant shellfish in the area. Benedict Arnold, the revolutionary traitor, conducted raids on Connecticut from the Oysterponds. The community was renamed, in 1836, in honor of General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox of the Revolutionary War.” Since there was already a Marion in upstate NY, the community was named East Marion.
